As a professional business coach, I am often asked by my business partners and associates to provide information on how to become as lucky as I have been in my career as a business coach, paid public speaker, and business owner.

My response is usually something like:

Step 1:  Review Options; clearly define the goal role and/or industry.  Be as specific as you can in terms of working conditions, benefits and advancement opportunities, yet flexible.

Step 2:  Be Flexible; you may be working in a marketing firm, performing your duties as a public relations specialist, for example, and yet, practically every industry requires your public relations skills.

Step 3:  Be Adaptable; tailor your resume and communication to the people and departments that will be making the actual decisions regarding your fit for the job.

Finding a new career path, which many of us are retooling our education and experience to fit these rapidly changing times, is a bit like fishing.  You prepare ahead of time, start early and then wait.

Stay in communication.  Just like throwing out the hook to catch the right fit for your future, it's a good idea to stay in touch, to promote rapport.
